Sibylle Bergemann (1941–2010) is one of the most significant German photographers and is regarded as the best-known international representative of photography from the GDR. Over more than four decades, she developed a multi-faceted body of work that encompasses cityscapes, fashion and portrait photography as well as essayistic photo-essays. Her images oscillate between dream and social reality and are characterised by a precise, often poetic composition. Recurring themes such as the city and portraits of women, as well as her photographic journeys to Dakar, Moscow, New York and Paris, structure her work. The exhibition presents photographs from 1966 to 2010 and pays tribute to an artist who has left a lasting mark on the history of photography and influenced several generations of photographers.
The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Sibylle Bergemann Estate.
